WEB QUARTERLY
*NEW ISSUE & NEW LOOK COMING JANUARY 99*

$400 Billion in Internet-Commerce by 2002
he number of Web users is about to head for Outer Space. A new report from International Data Corp. predicts massive growth in the number of Web users in the next four years, estimating a total of 320 million people with access to the World Wide Web by 2002. IDC also estimates the number of devices used to access the Web will increase from 78.8 million to more than 515 million in the same period.

Is Internet commerce, or "e-commerce", the future of retail?

Stores that never close, no pushy sales people, a wealth of free information and generous discounts are just a few of the reasons home shoppers are turning to the Web when flexing their mighty plastic muscles.

WEB CHART

According to NUA Internet Surveys, the number of people buying on the Web is expected to increase from 18 million in December 1997 to 128 million in 2002, representing more than 400 billion US dollars worth of e-commerce transactions. This would equal a 1997- 2002 com- pound annual growth rate of 103%. Yikes! Did someone say "runaway train?"

The Speed of Design?

The attention span of the average Web surfer is akin to that of the common house flea...about 5-7 seconds. This is about the time you have to keep their attention before they click right on by. That is of course, once your page loads in the browser. What can you do as an Internet business to combat this instant gratification problem? Speed and ease of Navigation. No, they are not out there surfing the Web with motor boats. Your site needs to load fast, fast, fast. Did I mention your site must load fast? The total amount of imagery for each page should be limited to 36-40k, including backgrounds, logos, bullets, pictures, etc. (This page uses 10 images totaling only 21.3k.) Image optimization is king - image compression, color reduction, and knowing what format is appropriate for what kind of image, are all factors. Ease of navigation means surfers need to find what they are looking for quickly and easily...within 3 clicks or they are gone, gone, gone. Cross platform and browser compatibility must be addressed as well.

Professional Web Design & Marketing will Dramatically Improve Web Site Effectiveness.

If all of this Web-speak sounds Greek to you, there is no need to be intimidated. This is exactly what your Web professional is for. A Web Site can be designed or redesigned for your specific needs in a short period of time and can evolve as your business evolves. The cost is not as high as you might expect. It can be great fun & highly profitable.
